HNS Mahavidyalaya

HNS Mahavidyalaya

HNS Mahavidyalaya: It was November 1977, a group of local personages converged in a small shed in Chandol Bazar where Sri Kelu Charan Barik offered the idea of setting up a college for the propagation of higher education among the deprived and the poor students of this rural area.

After protracted deliberations a body namely “Proposed Chandol College Committee” was constituted under the stewardship of Late Banamali Brahmachari, a doyen of the teacherdom of Orissa, intended to run in the shadow of the still extant “The Job oriented Education Society, Chandol,” In this connection, however, the public would always appreciate the contribution of celebrities of the area like late Hrudayananda Naik, first and distinguished Chartered Accountant of Orissa, Late Gagan Bihari Bhadra, Sri Nilamani Nayak and many others who had striven to make the dream of the people of the area come true.

Establishment of an institution is a real challenge at it calls for an all-out effort by a team of ardent and dedicated people, massive funds and above all the, co-operation and good wishes of the general public. Eventually the College was inaugurated by Sri Bed Prakash Agarwalla on the 15t August, 1979 in the premises of Bagdevi Bidyapitha, Daliji, with the invaluable co-operation of the dignitaries like Advocate Sachidananda Mohanty, Advocate Bhagabat Prasad Mohanty & others.

Soon after teaching commenced with 32 students in the 15t Year Intermediate Arts class.

In 1980, the foundation stone of the present building of the College was lead by Pandit Indramani Mishra of Narsinghapur and after words the classes and office were shifted to the present Campus due to the concerted and zealous effort of Sri Panchanan Satapathy, Sri Kelu Charan Naik, Sri Haladhar Naik, Sri Rajkishor Jena, Sri Padmanav Mohanty. Kudos to the members of the then staff, students and especially the youth of the locality for their unstinted selfless support and succor which went a long way to start and sustain this temple of higher learning.

But the institution was dogged by misfortune, as it were in the devastating floods of the newly erected house was badly damaged and most of the assets were washed away as the flood waters inundated the area after the Luna River Bank snapped and following year also (i.e. in 1983) before the college could recuperate her financial losses it was again struck by another dreadful cyclone which for a time paralyzed all progress. The picture changed abruptly. The hopes for a bright tomorrow were not abandoned. Once again construction and repair work was resumed with renewed vigour and great gusto. To provide accommodation to the steadily increasing number of students the necessity of building more halls and rooms was deeply felt.

Passing through many odds and ordeals, the institution survived dreaming to become a full fledged college. Over the past 19 years the student strength has increased at a considerably high rate, say for instance, from 32 in 1979 to nearly 700 at present. Likewise the number of teaching staff has gone up from 6 to 30 and that of the non-teaching from 1 to 15 at present.

The college is affiliated to Utkal University and Council of Higher Secondary Education, Orissa, to provide teaching facility for the three years integrated course in Arts(Both Pass and Honours) and two year course in Arts, Science and Vocational Courses for +2 Examination Respectively.

In 1991, the college secured permanent concurrence and affiliation for the degree classes from Utkal University. It has earned the status of being Degree College in Derabish Block having the privileges of being registered under 2(f), 12(B) of UGC Act. The college is gradually expanding and now provides teaching facilities; in five Honours subjects i.e. History, Economics, Sociology, Political Science and Oriya. And steps are always being contemplated to provide more and more amenities to the students for the fuller flowering of their inherent capacity in particular and stepping up the standard of education in general.

After the passing away of Sri Hrudayananda Naik, the founder president of the first Governing Body of the college, the institution has renamed in the memory & of him in 1996-97

Laxminarayan College, Jharshuguda

Laxminarayan College

Laxminarayan College was established on August 18,1969 with the concerted efforts of a coterie of dedicated souls to fulfill the aspirations of the people of the locality. It was named after Pundit Laxminarayan Mishra a patriot and social worker. In contrast with the wide present day educational facilities, by then there was no educational institution nearly leaving apart the Kuchinda College at Kuchinda and a Govt. College at Sundergarh. An educational institution was essential at Jharsuguda and ultimately Laxminarayan College came into being with Dr. Narayan Sankar Behera, the president and Sri Ganesh Patel the secretary of the first establishment committee.
Since the inception of the college, it has long strides along the path of progress and success. At present, it is a full-fledged college with Arts, Science and Commerce streams both at +2 and +3 levels. Because of honours teaching facilities in almost all subjects in +3 level, this college is attracting students of other colleges. Anthropology, Industrial Fish and Fishery, which are rare subjects in many colleges, are being taught in this college. As Jharsuguda is caught in the web of industrialization and scientific advancement, the students need to be educated in modern day subjects. Hence, proposals have been sent to the higher authority for the opening of Information Technology as a subject in this college.
To say a few more words on the academic aspect, there are experienced teachers with M.Phil and Ph.D qualifications, who are adept in imparting qualitative education. The student strength of the college is appreciably good although a number of colleges have sprung up in the nearly areas. Students of other colleges take interest to enroll themselves in this college for the qualitative teaching. With a view to academic development of students, seminars and conference are organised time and often and students participation in them in encouraged. The consequence of such an academic ambience is commendable. The results in +3 level are praiseworthily and the names of a number of +3 students figure in the result sheet of Sambalpur university every year occupying positions in Best Ten.
Apart from the academic aspect, the students are encouraged to play active role in extra curricular activities and they are bringing laurels of glory to this college in these fields. There are two wings of N.C.C namely Army and Naval both for boys and girls and the active participation of students in these wings is praiseworthily. They not only discipline their lives and build up their career by joining NCC but also pledge to be better sentinels to safeguard the nation. Many students are enlisted in NSS works and they have been doing people’s welfare works in the periphery of Jharsuguda. Some students are members of the Red Cross Society and their contribution to social cause is commendable. A few students of this college, interested in sports and Athletics have made their mark even at the national level.

Last but not least the infrastructure development, a Ladies Hostel, a rich library with rare collection of books a magnificent college building and a large number of employees steal the show in the modern academic scenario.

Shailabala Women’s College

shailabala womens college

Shailabala Women’s College, Cuttack, is one of the oldest and most renowned colleges for women’s education in the country, where generations of Odia girls have received education and enlightenment with which they have shaped the form and destiny of the state and the nation. The college owes its existence to two of the foremost pioneering spirits of Odisha, Utkal Gourav Madhusudan Das and his adopted daughter, Miss Shailabala Das. Situated near the holy shrine of Goddess Katak Chandi, the majestic college building stands imposingly on mission Road, the silver city of Odisha.

Shailabala in an age where women were marginalized, was in the forefront of a movement for women’s social, cultural and educational uplift and empowerment. She was a member of the Board of Education, constituted by the Government of Bihar and Odisha in 1912, to look into the problems of education in odisha. Miss Shailabala Das and Mrs. Banks represented Odisha at the Board meeting in Ranchi, where the opening of an intermediate college for women was recommended. Accordingly, intermediate classes started functioning in the premises of Ravenshaw Girls’ School in the year 1913. In 1917, both the school and college shifted to a new locality in Choudhury Bazar.

The intermediate women’s College was raised to the status of a first grade degree college only in 1946. The college having no separate building of its own functioned within the Ravenshaw Girls’ High School with lot of difficulties, the college classes could be held only during the morning hours. As a way out, Miss Shailabala Das in 1952 offered the residential building of Late Utkal Gourava Madhusudan Das along with the premises as a gift to accommodate the Women’s College. In the same year the college was shifted to the hallowed space of the residence of Utkai Gourava Madhusudan, the architect of modern orissa. The residence has been sanctified by the visit of Mahatma Gandhi, the father of the nation. Subsequently Madhu Mandir, the residential quarter of Miss Shailabala Das was sold to the government to be used for the college.

To make the college adaptable to the needs of an academic institution for higher education, a new block of rooms adjoining
Madhu Smruti was built by the authorities. The University Grants Commission provided financial assistance to construct a new three-storied block, which now accommodates the library and the study room for the students. A hostel with a capacity to house one hundred boarders was built in 1959 on a newly acquired piece of land. Now the college has three different hostels for the students.

in 1962 on the northern side of the public road opposite the college building, a piece of land was acquired which enabled the authority to construct a new block to accommodate the science faculties. Pre-university Science and Pre-Professional Science classes started in 1962 and 1963 respectively. Pass classes in Bachelor of Science started in 1966 and Honours classes in Science started in 1973-74.

In addition, a +2 vocational college has been functioning as part of the college, thus enabling students to learn vocational skills and equip themselves for various trades and professions.

The college witnessed another landmark in its academic progress when Post-Craduate course in Home Science was introduced in 1982-83. Post-Graduate classes in History and Sanskrit which began in 1993-94 were certainly another big stride in its academic leap forward, with the introduction of Honours in Computer Science in 2000-2001, the college has updated itself with the latest developments in information Technology and computer Education.

The college found relief with acquisition of a sizeable tract of land adjoining the college building on its western side and now there is ample space for expansion of its faculties and building. The land has been used to prepare a two hundred meter track. The newly constructed auditorium will facilitate to organise meeting, seminar and to conduct examinations in the college.

The campus is replete with memories of the epic endeavour of Utkal Gourava to find for Oriyas an identity and an honoured place. It continues to be a place of pilgrimage for patriotic souls. Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the first prime minister of India visited the college to unveil the statue of Madhusudan Das on the campus. Influenced by the spirit of Shailabala Das the college has a long history of success. The college has been awarded ‘A’ grade by the NAAC (National Assessment and Accreditation Council) of the University Grants commission. At present, the college has 2000 students on its rolls. Now it imparts education at the higher secondary, undergraduate and postgraduate levels attracting students from different parts of Odisha and the neighbouring states.
