NIST Berhampur – National Institute of Science and Technology

NIST Berhampur

The National Institute of Science & Technology (NIST) was established in the year 1996 by a group of academicians educated in the top Institutes of India & abroad. The founder Director, Prof Sangram Mudali is B.Tech from IIT Kanpur (1985) & MS from University of Houston, USA (1987). He & his wife Mrs. Geetika Mudali, Placement Director (B.Tech-Osmania University, MS-NJIT, USA) left USA to establish a world class Institute in their home state of Orissa. Within a few years the reputation of the Institute spread far and wide and it admitted students only from the top 20% of the Orissa Joint Entrance Examinations and All India Entrance Examinations. Not a single seat of the Institute has been vacant in the last 17 years. Within a short span of 17 years, it has produced 4 BOYSCAST faculty scholars who have been funded by Government of India to pursue postgraduate research in the top Institutes in USA and Germany. NIST has produced 3 FullBright Scholars. Three of its faculty has won the Samant Chandrasekhar Young Scientist Award given by the Government of Orissa. Two AICTE funded Emeritus Professors worked at NIST. The faculty of the Institute has been awarded 3 URSI Young Scientist Awards. The faculties of the Institute have published more than 250 journal papers in refereed journals and are authors of about 24 books published by reputed publishing houses. The Institute also has its own publishing house “NIST Press”. The Institute has received a number of grants, projects, special funding, travel funding, SDPs, FIST grant, scholarships, etc., from the DST, CSIR, AICTE, IT companies, etc. The faculty of the Institute has fully committed themselves to the Institute and the turnover ratio, i.e., number of faculty leaving the Institute in a year, is less than 10% which is extremely low as compared to similar academic Institutes. The major component of this is to go to IIT/NIT/abroad for higher education etc. The faculty of the Institute enjoys unlimited access to research journals, participate in conferences in India or abroad, initial research seed grants of Rs. 2 Lakhs each, financial remuneration for publication of books or research papers, state-of-the art laboratories, conducive work ambience and other benefits which are currently only available to faculty of top institutes such as IIT’s and NIT’s.

Govt Womens College Balangir

Balangir womens college

Govt Women’s College, Bolangir was founded in the year 1962 and was affiliated to Utkal University till Sambalpur University was formed in the year 1967 and the College was affiliated to it. The College was primarily under private management and was taken over by the Govt. on 1st October 1965. In the beginning, the College was housed in a private building in the Ladies Club and later on, it was shifted to the Panchayat Bhawan. Today the College is proud of having an independent building of its own with a few sets of quarters for the Principal and staff in addition to a palatial building for the hostel. Now the strength of the College has gone up.

In the year 1979 the College could not take in all the interested applicants for admission into 1st yr. I.A. and B.A. Classes. So the Govt. was kind enough to increase the number of seats from 96 to 128 in I.A. and 64 to 80 in B.A. classes. Again the number of seats in +2 was increased upto 192 in 1986-87 and to 256 in 1989-90. Accordingly the no. of seats in B.A. classes was increased upto 256. Now the sanctioned student strength of the College has gone up to 1280. With the switch over to 10+2+3 pattern of Education, +2 and +3 classes were started in the College from 1983-84 and 1985-86 respectively. Consequent upon the separation of +2 & +3 wings in 2001, the +2 wing has been named as Govt Women’s Jr. College, Bolangir.

The College now imparts honours teaching in English, Oriya, Economics, Psychology, History, Home Science, Political Science and Sanskrit. With the increase of students strength, the number of teaching and the non -teaching staff has also increased proportionately. The strength of the College hostel has gone up. Women students from the surrounding districts get an opportunity to come and study here.

Central University of Orissa,Koraput

cuo koraput

The Central University of Orissa,Koraput has been established by the Parliament under the Central Universities Act, 2009 (No. 3C of 2009). It is one of the 15 new Central Universities established by the Government of India during the UGC XI Plan period to address the concerns of “equity and access” and as per the policy of the Government of India to increase the access to quality higher education by people in less educationally developed districts which have a Graduate Enrollment Ratio of less than the national average of 11%. Koraput District of Orissa comes within the KBK region (Koraput, Bolangir and Kalahandi) which is still considered as an extremely as underdeveloped region of the State of Orissa .These three districts of the State are known for tribal culture, because majority of the people here belong to ST and SC categories. Since there is no University or any other national level educational set up in this region the Central University is proposed to be established here so that it may widen the access to quality higher education in the country.
