The National Institute of Science & Technology (NIST) was established in the year 1996 by a group of academicians educated in the top Institutes of India & abroad. The founder Director, Prof Sangram Mudali is B.Tech from IIT Kanpur (1985) & MS from University of Houston, USA (1987). He & his wife Mrs. Geetika Mudali, Placement Director (B.Tech-Osmania University, MS-NJIT, USA) left USA to establish a world class Institute in their home state of Orissa. Within a few years the reputation of the Institute spread far and wide and it admitted students only from the top 20% of the Orissa Joint Entrance Examinations and All India Entrance Examinations. Not a single seat of the Institute has been vacant in the last 17 years. Within a short span of 17 years, it has produced 4 BOYSCAST faculty scholars who have been funded by Government of India to pursue postgraduate research in the top Institutes in USA and Germany. NIST has produced 3 FullBright Scholars. Three of its faculty has won the Samant Chandrasekhar Young Scientist Award given by the Government of Orissa. Two AICTE funded Emeritus Professors worked at NIST. The faculty of the Institute has been awarded 3 URSI Young Scientist Awards. More than 25 Post doctorate scholarships have been awarded to the Institute faculty. The faculties of the Institute are alumni of IIT’s, IISc, ISI, Jadavpur University and Calcutta University etc. More than 35 faculty of the Institute are from the IITs alone which is a testimony to its ability to attract and retain top-notch faculty. The faculties of the Institute have published more than 250 journal papers in refereed journals and are authors of about 24 books published by reputed publishing houses. The Institute also has its own publishing house “NIST Press”. The Institute has received a number of grants, projects, special funding, travel funding, SDPs, FIST grant, scholarships, etc., from the DST, CSIR, AICTE, IT companies, etc. The faculty of the Institute has fully committed themselves to the Institute and the turnover ratio, i.e., number of faculty leaving the Institute in a year, is less than 10% which is extremely low as compared to similar academic Institutes. The major component of this is to go to IIT/NIT/abroad for higher education etc. The faculty of the Institute enjoys unlimited access to research journals, participate in conferences in India or abroad, initial research seed grants of Rs. 2 Lakhs each, financial remuneration for publication of books or research papers, state-of-the art laboratories, conducive work ambience and other benefits which are currently only available to faculty of top institutes such as IIT’s and NIT’s.

NIST has once again proved its credentials in bagging the “Best Technical Institute in R & D Activities” in the State of Odisha. The Award was received by NIST at a glittering ceremony in Jaydev Bhavan, Bhubaneswar on the eve of Engineers’ Day-2013.

NIST is a considered as a benchmark research institution in eastern India. The Institute has recently signed MoU’s for research collaboration in the field of nanosciences, communications, semiconductor technology with the National Taiwan University and University of Electro Communications, Japan. NIST has signed MoU with industries like Sandhur and SunMoksha for collaborative work in the area of nano technology and renewal energy. TIFAC-Technology Information Forecasting and Assessment Council established its Rs. 9.15 crore Centre of Excellence at NIST on 3G/4G Communication Technologies sponsored by the Department of Science and Technology, Govt. of India. The foundation of this mission rests firmly on the triangular linkage between the academic institution, industry and government. Its objective is to create a Centre of Excellence for the growth of Indian Telecom Industry and an Incubator for Emerging Technologies in the field of Communication. Cadence, a global VLSI Tool Company, in association with NIST, Berhampur, Odlsha got the Cadence Centre of Excellence inaugurated at the NIST premises on 10th August 2010. This is the one and only Cadence Center in India apart from the one in China and Brazil. The IBM Center of Excellence, the 1st of its kind in Orissa, was inaugurated at NIST by Himanshu Goyal, IBM Country Manager and Mr. Vikash Manoria, IBM Academic Initiative representative on 27th October 2009. It is established to give students and faculty the opportunity to work closely with the industry and utilize both the resources in the best possible manner. IBM has donated software worth lakhs in the fields of database engineering, software engineering, web applications, etc. In addition, IBM key faculty is training our students towards certification. NIST faculty is working together with IBM trainers on key projects, sabbaticals, research, etc. Similarly SAP, National Instruments, Texas Instruments, WIPRO Mission 10X Centre, academic institutions such as IIT, Kharagpur are collaborating with NIST on a number of R & D projects.

The placement of students in NIST has been its crowning glory. Top MNCs, IT companies have recruited hundreds of students each year since its inception. For example, for the 2011 batch Infosys hired 138 Students, Cap Gemini 129 Students, Wipro 88 Students, HCL 83 Students, Mahindra Satyam 55 Students, VLSI Companies 56 Students, is indicative of Industry confidence in the Institute’s graduates. The Institute has a strong entrepreneurial culture having established its DST and MSME funded incubator in the campus like K-Technologies, Solanix, Wiz-Biz Technologies. National Institute of Technology – NIT – Rourkela:The National Institute of Technology Rourkela (NIT Rourkela) is one of India’s premier technical colleges, and is recognised as an Institute of National Importance within the country.

NIT Rourkela’s academic departments encompass engineering, sciences, mathematics and architecture. Students at the university have a broad spectrum of courses to choose from, and can delve into specialist technical fields such as ceramic engineering, metallurgy and mining.

Research at the university is carried out at one of its high-tech centres. The university has several investigations into cutting-edge topics, such as the Centre for Robotics’ work into autonomous underwater vehicles.

About National Institute of Science Education and Research – NISER :An Autonomous Institute under DAE, Government of India .  A primary objective of the Institute is to train and nurture human resources in the Sciences for the knowledge economies of the future. This is in line with a general shift in geo-political thinking that requires a remedy for sites of knowledge production centred in the west. Such a strategic shift in perspective has been necessitated by the realization that the unique circumstances of our nation demand unique scientific and pedagogic responses. Consequently, we are called upon to question and account for conventional narratives that stake claims to categorizations of science, technology, environment, learning, innovation, design and being. The Veer Surendra Sai University of Technology (VSSUT) Odisha was formed by Orissa Act 9 of 2009 by converting University College of Engineering (UCE), Burla to a non-affiliating Unitary University and came into force by issue of notification by the Industries Department, Government of Odisha from 1st day of July 2009(Vide memo No.IV/TTI-33/2009-8553 and 8564 dtd.10th June 2009. The 1st Statutes of VSSUT, Burla 2010 has been approved by the Odisha Government vide Industry Department notification No.V-FE-II-01/2010/8697 dated 21st June, 2010. This State Government University is also recognized by University Grants Commission (UGC), New Delhi vide UGC letter No.. F.9-36/2009(CPP-I) dtd.5th Jan 2010. The University is empowered to award degrees as specified by the UGC under section 22 of the UGC Act. The University has been declared eligible to receive central assistance under Section 12B of the UGC Act vide letter F.No.9-36/2009(CPP-I/PU) dated 8th November, 2012.

This legendary University is named after Veer Surendra Sai, the great Indian freedom fighter who was born on 23rd January 1809 and sacrificed his life fighting against the British and died in obscurity in Asirgarh Jail on 28 February 1884. In a University where so many young scholars have come to build their lives, Veer Surendra Sai is a perfect role model for our professionals in making to dedicate their life to the cause of motherland. The University continues to feel proud for this real life hero.

Situated at the foothill of world famous Hirakud dam, the early history of the University is a fascinating chapter in the story of technical education in Odisha. Established on 12th Aug. 1956, at Burla in the name of University College of Engineering (UCE), the first engineering college was functioning as a constituent college of Utkal University, Bhubaneswar. The primary objective was of establishing the engineering college is to produce engineers who can manage Hirakud Dam.

The University occupies nearly 300 acres of prime land in Burla. Indeed, the contribution from the Irrigation Department of Odisha was the decisive element in determining the location of this University.

Burla is located at 21°30′N 83°52′E21.5°N 83.87°E. It has an average elevation of 173 metres (567 feet). The town lies at one end of Hirakud Dam which is located around 2 km north-west of the town. The Jawahar Minar offers picturesque views of the dam, the lake and the surrounding forests of Barapahad (12 hills). At the otherside of the dam is the township of Hirakud.

The Burla town is piquant and truly a university town as it hosts the Sambalpur University, the VSS Medical College and the Veer Surendra Sai University of Technology, Burla, besides numerous schools and colleges. It is the most ideal place for learning and to achieve one’s priviledged dreams. Burla is well connected to Bhubaneswar, Jharsuguda, Raipur and Kolkata with roads and railways. Burla is only 10km away from Sambalpur by road and railways.
In 1956, UCE started with 20 students enrolling into 3 branches, namely the Civil Engineering, the Electrical Engineering and the Mechanical Engineering. Subsequently, UCE got transferred to the administrative control of Sambalpur University in January 1967 and later on to Biju Patnaik University of Technology (BPUT) by BPUT Act-2002 in July, 2002.

With a glorious history stretching back over 55 years, providing technical education within a modern educational environment and strong academic staff, VSSUT is strongly identified with engineering education in India. Since its inception and foundation, VSSUT has constantly lead the way in reform movements, taking pivotal roles in the reconstruction, modernization, and administration of the society.
