Centurian University

CENTURION AT LARGE

The journey of Centurion began in 2005 by a group of ambitious professionals having aspirations to take it to the pinnacle of quality education, nationally and internationally. The first foray in this respect was the takeover of a failing engineering college in Parlakhemundi, Gajapati: the Jagannath Institute for Technology and Management (JITM). Gajapati is the poorest district of Odisha State, and appears in the Prime Minister’s “100 poorest districts” and “31 most extremist affected districts” list. Since then, committed efforts have been made to bring about a difference to this area; both academically and socio-economically.
Today, the Centurion University has five campuses at Paralakhemundi, Bhubaneswar, Bolangir, Rayagada, and Chatrapur offering B. Tech., MBA, +2 Science, ITI, Primary and Secondary Education in addition to Skill and Vocational Training and Social Entrepreneurship initiatives.

The university headquarters is located at Paralakhemundi, Odisha with its constituent campuses at Jatni, Rayagada and Bolangir. While the campuses at Paralakhemundi and Jatni run undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in Engineering, Technology and Management, the campuses at Rayagada and Bolangir offer postgraduate programmes in Basic and Applied sciences. Further, in the campus at Paralakhemundi, undergraduate programmes in Agriculture Science& Engineering are also offered. In addition to the above mentioned programmes, the University also conducts research programmes leading to Ph.D. The School of vocational education and training named as Gram Tarang is the action learning lab for all the other schools and departments. Today Gram Tarang is one of the major skill providers in India. The University students, faculty gets action learning and hands on practical experience through the “Gram Tarang outreach organizations.

Centurion University (through its social outreach entity, Gram Tarang) is one of the first partner to National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) to set up over 50 Skill Training and Capacity Building Centres across the country. We are proud to have entered into partnership with Government of Odisha, Government of India and non-government agencies to provide vocational training with job assurance for BPL, SC & ST youth, who would otherwise be unemployed and unemployable due to lack of adequate education and/or skills.

The focus has been and shall remain the conduit for ameliorating livelihood through self-employment unemployability of marginalised communities of rural and remote areas. The University will continue to address the problem of naxalism, which is considered to be more a socio-economic challenge than a law and order issue. The Centurion University’s training programmes have also been nationally recognised. In August 2010, Gram Tarang Employability Training Services has received the “Best Skills Project in Rural Communities” award at the UK-India Skills Forum Awards 2010.

Rama Devi Women’s University

Rama Devi Women’s University, one of the premier women’s institution of Orissa, started functioning as Government Women’s University from the year 1964 in a small building of the Labour Department, Government of Orissa. The University was shifted to the Old School Building of Unit-1 in 1966 and finally to the present campus of about 28 acres on 1st January, 1969.

A month later it was named after Maa Rama Devi, a great Orissan freedom fighter and a devout Gandhian. In 1990 the University celebrated its Silver Jubilee with enthusiasm and joy. From 1st June 1994, it was elevated to the status of a lead University and in 1995, it became the first Post-Graduate college of the State Capital with the opening of M.A. classes in Hindi and Home Science. From the academic session 1999-2000, this premier institution has been declared by the UGC an Autonomous College with effect from the session 2001-2002. Consequent upon the visit of the NAAC peer team to the University in August, 2004, the NACC (UGC) taking all the parameters of assessment into consideration, have awarded `A’ GRADE to this college w.e.f. 16.9.2004. The Post-Graduate and Degree Classes are functioning under rama devi women’s autonomous college and Higher Secondary Classes are placed under rama devi women’s junior college. The library, class rooms, and other infrastructure are shared by the two colleges.

The autonomous college imparts P.G. teaching in Hindi and Home Science and Honours teaching in English, Oriya, Hindi, Sanskrit, History, Economics, Political Science, Philosophy, Sociology, Mathematics, Accountancy, Management, Physics, Chemistry, Botany and Zoology. Honours in Computer Science is taught as a self financing course. Under the UGC assistance, four vocational subjects namely (i) Clinical Nutrition, (ii) Secretarial Practice and Office Management, (iii) Food Science & Quality Control, and (iv) Industrial Fish & Fisheries are taught at degree level. Each year the college produces students of outstanding calibre, who hold positions in Higher Secondary and University Examinations in Science, Commerce and Arts. The NCC and NSS Volunteers of this college have earned name and fame, both within and outside the State.

Last but not the least, it is our fondly cherished dream to see this premier women’s institution of Orissa as a deemed women’s university.
