Govt Womens College Balangir

Balangir womens college

Govt Women’s College, Bolangir was founded in the year 1962 and was affiliated to Utkal University till Sambalpur University was formed in the year 1967 and the College was affiliated to it. The College was primarily under private management and was taken over by the Govt. on 1st October 1965. In the beginning, the College was housed in a private building in the Ladies Club and later on, it was shifted to the Panchayat Bhawan. Today the College is proud of having an independent building of its own with a few sets of quarters for the Principal and staff in addition to a palatial building for the hostel. Now the strength of the College has gone up.

In the year 1979 the College could not take in all the interested applicants for admission into 1st yr. I.A. and B.A. Classes. So the Govt. was kind enough to increase the number of seats from 96 to 128 in I.A. and 64 to 80 in B.A. classes. Again the number of seats in +2 was increased upto 192 in 1986-87 and to 256 in 1989-90. Accordingly the no. of seats in B.A. classes was increased upto 256. Now the sanctioned student strength of the College has gone up to 1280. With the switch over to 10+2+3 pattern of Education, +2 and +3 classes were started in the College from 1983-84 and 1985-86 respectively. Consequent upon the separation of +2 & +3 wings in 2001, the +2 wing has been named as Govt Women’s Jr. College, Bolangir.

The College now imparts honours teaching in English, Oriya, Economics, Psychology, History, Home Science, Political Science and Sanskrit. With the increase of students strength, the number of teaching and the non -teaching staff has also increased proportionately. The strength of the College hostel has gone up. Women students from the surrounding districts get an opportunity to come and study here.
